Flowering orchid archway over a path at the National Orchid Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens

A Day at the National Orchid Garden, Singapore

In 2022 I spent a single day at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and it's still one of the most productive days of photography I've ever had. The reason: the National Orchid Garden, tucked inside the wider grounds of the Botanic Gardens, home to one of the largest orchid collections on Earth.

A UNESCO World Heritage Garden

The Singapore Botanic Gardens holds the distinction of being the only tropical garden in the world to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within it, the National Orchid Garden showcases thousands of orchid species and hybrids, arranged across a series of themed zones and cool, shaded conservatories that protect the more delicate varieties from the tropical heat.

What struck me most, walking through it that day, was the sheer density and variety on display — colours and forms I genuinely hadn't seen before, packed into every corner of the garden. Some orchids were displayed in sweeping mass plantings along garden beds, others isolated as individual specimens under glass, each one lit differently depending on the time of day and the surrounding foliage.

A Single Day, Hundreds of Frames

I only had one day in Singapore, which meant moving with purpose — no second visits, no coming back for better light. I spent hours working through the garden section by section, chasing the shifting light through the canopy, getting low for close-up detail shots of individual blooms, and stepping back for wider compositions that captured the scale of the collection.

Orchids are a genuinely rewarding subject. The detail in the petals, the range of colour and texture from one variety to the next, the way light passes through a translucent bloom differently to how it reflects off a waxy one — there was more than enough material from that single day to build a full calendar around.

The Orchids Wall Calendar

That's exactly what happened. The photographs from that day at the National Orchid Garden became the foundation of the Orchids Wall Calendar — twelve months of orchid photography, drawn entirely from the hours I spent in that garden in 2022.

You can find the Orchids Wall Calendar here — personalised to order, and a reminder of just how much can come out of a single, well-spent day with a camera.
